Lottery

Here we analyses the various formats of lottery and calculate the effective odds of the game for you. Read & Learn!

What is a Lottery?

A lottery is sort of gambling game usually organized by a government. The winning combination in a lottery is determined by drawing lots but the lottery is forbidden in some countries, while in others it is often organized on the national level.

Formats:

There are many formats of lottery.
  • Some lotteries guarantee a fixed prize of money or goods (in this case the organizers risk not to sell enough tickets to compensate the prize)
  • Some pay out prizes based on the percentage of the receipts. Many percentage based lotteries have progressive jackpots, accumulated until the main prize is won.
  • Some lotteries sell tickets with unique numbers, so only one ticket wins.
  • Others offer to choose numbers from number pots. In this case, a number of people can compose the winning combination and to share the prize. The main prize is given when all numbers of the ticket correspond to the winning lot. Most global lotteries also offer secondary prizes for a partial match.

Who Run Lotteries?

Most lotteries are run by either local or national governments and generate massive revenues described as regressive tax. Sometimes it is also called a tax on stupidity, because the odds against winning the main prize are astronomical. Playing lottery certainly does not prove stupidity, but in comparison with other forms of gambling it has very low winning chances. However, lottery probably is the most popular gambling game. Risking small money for the chance to win an enormous prize and obvious reliability of the organizer attracts many clients, especially those of low class, who believe that the lottery is their only hope to become rich.

What are your Chances?

As we previously mentioned, the chances to win the main prize are tremendously low. For example, a standard lottery format where a player must guess 6 numbers out of 49 regardless of the order provides the odds of 1 to 14 million, so out of 14 million people one will probably win the jackpot. And always bear in mind that buying a ticket each week, one is likely to win the jackpot within 14 million weeks (269 thousand years).

Powerball:

One particular US nationwide lottery is Powerball. It is very popular because of enormous jackpots played off each week. Powerball format is even less winnable. Although it requires to guess the same 6 numbers. 5 of these numbers must be selected from one pot of 53 numbers, and the last Powerball number from a separate pot of 42 numbers, so it makes two separate lotteries of 5 out of 53 and 1 out of 42 that must be won at the same time to obtain the main prize. Odds of Powerball are 1 to 120,526,770.

According to basic gambling strategy, a game with such odds is worth playing only if the prize relates to the bet in the same proportion. It can occasionally happen with a progressive jackpot, but generally the game is very unprofitable. Speaking in casino terms, the house edge is about 50 percent, which is far beyond any existing casino game.
