Important Texas Hold'em Poker Terms to Know



Have you ever noticed the poker jargon people use when they play? The first time I sat in on a game, it seemed like they were speaking a whole different language, I literally needed a dictionary but the words I wanted to look up would never be found in a Webster or an Oxford. In order to play a game of poker with the top dogs, you must be up to date with the lingo. There are million of poker terms out there however some are redundant and are just there to impress and distress the other players, but others are basic terms that you should know to play the game.

Most Important Words

Blind Bet
Is a bet made by players before the cards are dealt.

Call
When a play matches the bet of another player.

Fold
The player quits the game

Raise
You're raising the bet and adding more money to the table.

All In
You are betting all of your chips

Pre-Flop
This is in the first round of Texas Hold'em. The dealer deals gives the players two cards each, they're called Pocket Cards.

Flop
This happens in the second round of Texas Hold'em. Three cards which are the communal cards are placed on the table.

Turn
This is the third round of Texas Hold'em. A fourth communal card is placed on the table.

River
This is the last round of Texas Hold'em. The fifth and last communal card is placed on the table.

Some Words to play like a pro

Fifth Street
Another name for the River Card.

Big Chick
When you hold an Ace and a Queen in your hand.

Bad-Beat
When a nice hand gets destroyed by a player that just got a lucky hand.

Bust Out
To lose all your chips.

Of course the list of poker terms goes on and on but this should get you started. So go on, find some players and show off your lingo.
