About Parimutuel Betting Parimutual betting is a system in which all bets are placed in the same pool, and than paid off to the winners according to their number. E.g. if 100 bettors placed 1 dollar each, and 20 of them won, in theory, each winner will receive 5 dollars. In practice, it is not exactly so, because taxes and house take are remover and the payout sums are rounded down to a denomination interval, which in United States is 10 cents. Because the sums are rounded precisely down, it reduces the payout percentage. This rounding loss is called breakage. Parimutual betting is commonly used for horse racing, greyhound racing and all kinds of sporting events. Some bookmakers also offer bets on non-sportive competitions such as TV contests, presidential elections etc.
